On the day after their ship sinks, six sailors in two dories must fight the North Atlantic for survival. In the tradition of Lifeboat and The Perfect Storm, an implacable ocean is just one of the film’s key characters. The humans must contend with cold seas, fog and their own fears. In time, some understandable despair also creeps in as their sea-going camaraderie wears thin. The cynical non-believer mocks a religious crewmate and berates the captain for questionable decisions. Mannie is injured and faltering while inexperienced Dicky wonders whether he caused the accident. Finally, the captain must contend with his conscience, the presence of his young son, and an increasingly restive and worried crew. In time, however, the men must make peace between themselves and with their darkening survival prospects. Filmed off Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Mitchell has crafted a stark tale, one she presents with evocative cinematography and the help of an outstanding ensemble cast.
“As beautiful, turbulent and unflinching as the sea.” – Justin McConnell, themindreels.com.
