Co-winner of the Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival, The Eight Mountains
portrays the ebb and flow of a decades-long friendship set in the Italian
alps and offers a visually stunning landscape to Paolo Cognetti’s 2016 novel. The peaks,
hills and vistas are akin to Pietro and Bruno’s relationship, here depicted with the
minutia and expanse of a novelist. Intertwining moments of intimacy with the grandiose
of the mountains, this character-driven tale wonders if diverging paths can sometimes
cross again.
The framing of every shot is exquisite and the sense of place and time, the steepness and prospect of the mountains, the snow and freshnesss of spring are palpable. Sight and Sound; John Bleasdale
