(La Petite et le Vieux)
Steeped in nostalgia, the film is visually lovely, thanks to an impeccable historical
reconstruction of working-class Quebec in the 1980s. The neighbourhood is called
Limoilou- a blue-collar neighbourhood with a very diverse population and picturesque
charm.
A coming of age story, young Jo dreams of saving her unhappy father from his
monotonous job and helping him become the writer he dreams about. When Jo sees
him crying on a bus on his way home, she gets a paper route hoping the money she
earns might help him fulfill his dream. A very gruff and prickly elderly neighbour, with a
hidden tender heart, becomes her friend and ally in her quest.
Based on a novel of the same name, the film is an homage to community and the power
of imagination. Blue Sky Jo generates a humorous, feel good attitude. But tears may
also stream down your cheeks at some point. Keep the tissues close.
