My Father’s Shadow – April 8

The first Nigerian film to premiere at Cannes, and winner of the best director award at the British Independent Film Awards, this impressive debut tells a pressure-cooker of a story unfolding across a single day in 1993 as 2 young boys spend the day with their elusive father. And because much of My Father’s Shadow is relayed through the eyes of the two youngsters, certain information—both about the country as a whole and their father—remains mysterious or warped.
With the backdrop of the country’s presidential election this introspective film is an accomplished study of contrasts: humanity juxtaposed against violence, social unrest against the gentle and genial moments shared by the family, and a childlike wonder against the grim circumstances. What transpires could have happened, but perhaps it didn’t. Therein lies the strength of the film; the boys imagined their childhood full of interactions they wish they’d had. They create a meaningful memory to hold on to — for them and for anyone else lucky enough to see this beautiful film.
