Original title: Affeksjonsverd
Winner of this year’s Palme D’Or award at Cannes, it smashed the record for the longest standing ovation at 15 minutes!
Trier’s exquisite new film Sentimental Value is about familial love, at times harmonious, and at others tainted by resentment and anger. It’s a tangled family drama in which a celebrated filmmaker tries to use his art to reconnect with the family he’d abandoned long ago.
The director’s observations of the often complex contracts between sisters, and even more so between fathers and daughters, is intensely affecting in a movie coloured with melancholy but also infused with surprising notes of humour.
The depth of feeling will sneak up on you, without announcing itself, and you’re bound to leave the movie with a newfound gratitude for all that cinema can do.
